World leaders finished the penultimate round of UN Global Plastics Treaty negotiations. After hundreds of plastic-loving lobbyists descended on the treaty talks, governments failed again to commit to a comprehensive ban on throwaway single-use plastics. Beauty brand Dove owner Unilever is a key lobbyist at the negotiations. They hold immense power over decision makers and could make or break any future deal to solve the plastics crisis.
Right now, Dove and Unilever are refusing to ban toxic single-use plastics. They want to continue pumping out billions of impossible-to-recycle individual plastic packets — risking the health of millions of people across the globe. Dove and Unilever are co-opting feminist language to promote plastic products made from petrochemicals. It’s common in the UK, Europe and US to see Dove products in plastic bottles. But in many less affluent parts of the world, their products come in single-use plastic sachet packaging. Plastic sachets are highly polluting, unrecyclable, and pumped out in their billions every year. They’ve spent decades spreading disinformation and false claims that recycling can control plastic waste when the truth is that only cutting production will.
Dove say they care about ‘Real Beauty’. But there is no beauty in a brand that poisons our planet and threatens the health of our communities. Microparticles of plastic easily find their way into women’s bodies: plastic has been found in blood, placentas used by growing babies – and even in breastmilk.
If Dove won’t ditch plastic, it’s time we Ditch Dove. Sign the pledge to ditch all Dove products. Their toxic plastic hypocrisy has to end – for good. Greenpeace calls out to ditch all Dove products, until they:
